Experiment: A Good Sock

Date: 15/3/2013
AimTo find out what the temperatures are
HypothesisWearing socks made of ……………… will keep your   feet warmest in winter.
Materials   used
Method

  1.   Collect 500 mL of hot water in a jug.
  2.   Measure 100 mL of the hot water using a measuring cylinder, and pour   into a bottle using a funnel. Repeat for three other bottles as quickly as   possible.
  3.   Put three different types of socks onto three of the bottles, leaving   one bottle with no sock (as shown in diagram).
  1.   Screw a lid on each bottle, and carefully place a thermometer through   the hole.
  2.   Wait until the temperature on the thermometers have stopped rising,   then record temperature in the table (0 mins). Start a stopwatch and record   the temperature in each bottle every 2 minutes.
  3.   Ensure all equipment is put away carefully when the experiment is   finished.

Discussion

  1. The sock that lost the greatest amount of heat   was……………… which went down by ………oC.  The sock that lost the least amount of heat   was …………………………

  1. It was difficult to conduct this experiment   fairly. List as many of the difficulties as you can:
  •
  •
  1. Describe what you would do to minimise one of these problems.

  1. Was your hypothesis supported by the results? Give   a reason.

Conclusion

Conclusions   must be supported by evidence and should be based on results that can be   repeated. The conclusion should relate to the Aim of your experiment.
